A Centenary Celebration of St John’s Church

A Centenary Celebration

On 14th June 2025 St. John the Baptist Church will be one hundred years old. To celebrate the
centenary of our church, Bishop John Arnold, Bishop of Salford, will celebrate Mass for us on
Pentecost Sunday 8th June at 10.30am. To enable everyone to attend this Mass, Fr. Michael has
designated this as a Parish Mass and therefore it will be the only Mass celebrated in the parish
on that day.
When St John’s was opened on 14th June 1925 by Cardinal Bourne, Archbishop of Westminster,
records show that admission was by ticket only and a large crowd remained outside unable to find
a place in the church. In those days the pews extended to where the Marian Room and the rooms
on the confessional side are now: there would have been around 1,000 people in the church.
We may not have quite so many people celebrating a century of St. John’s, but it is to be
hoped that we will have a full church for a parish celebration. If you know someone who
has a connection with St. John’s, do invite them to attend with you on this special occasion
for the parish.
